چکیده
In 1899, France Thiercelin had first used the name “Enterocoque” in a published paper (Theircelin et al., 1899). The term Enterococcus derived from their presence in the intestinal tract as a normal flora. Enterococci are gram positive bacteria that typically appear as a pair of oval cocci, the cell are arranged at an angle to each other. The term Enterococcus was used for organism that grows at 10oC and 45oC, in 6.5% NaCl, and at pH 9.6 and which survived 60oC for 30min. They are normal resident of gastrointestinal and billiary tracts and in lower numbers in the vagina and male urethra. However when they colonize where they are not normally found they may become pathogen. They are becoming increasingly important agent of human disease, largely because of their resistance to antimicrobial agents. Among several species which belong to genus Enterococcus, E. faecalis the most common isolate, have association with 8090% of human Enterococcal infection. E. faecium isolated from 10-15% of infections (Washington). Other Enterococcal species like E. malodoratous, E. avium, E.cecorum, E. gallinarum, E. raffinosus, E. casseliflavus, E. dispar, E. hirae, E. durans, and E. mundtii are infrequently isolated from human infections. متن کاملSpecies prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of enterococci isolated in a tertiary care hospital of North India.
The present prospective study was carried out to determine the species distribution and antimicrobial susceptibilities of enterococci isolated from clinical samples in a tertiary care hospital of North India. Enterococcus species isolated from blood, urine, pus, sterile fluids and the hospital environment from October 2003 to January 2004 were identified by standard biochemical tests. Antimicro...
متن کاملA Study on the Prevalence and Susceptibility Pattern of MRSA in a Tertiary Care Hospital of Haroti Region
Background and Aims: Emerging antimicrobial resistance is one of the major public health threats worldwide. It can result in increased morbidity and mortality rates along with increased treatment costs and hospitalization stays. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a global challenge. It is a major cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Its prevalence va...
متن کاملThe prevalence and the characterization of the enterococcus species from various clinical samples in a tertiary care hospital.
BACKGROUND Enterococci form a part of the normal flora of the intestinal tract, the oral cavity, and the vagina, but in recent times, they have become emerging nosocomial pathogens. Their increasing importance is largely due to their resistance to antimicrobials. The therapeutic failures in enterococcal infections are mainly due to the intrinsic as well as transferable drug resistance. The main...
متن کاملDetection of Metallo-Beta-lactamase Production in Rare Carbapenem-Resistant Non-fermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Visakhapatnam, India
Introduction: Non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) are occasionally involved in infectious diseases pathology, but have shown resistance to multiple antibiotics and the capability to gain new resistance factors in the hospital environment. The present study was aimed to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of rare NFGNB isolated from different clinical samples and the pre...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Resistance Pattern of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Isolates from a Tertiary Care Setting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobials. Like Pseudomonas spp., this bacterium has a remarkable ability to cause infections, particularly in the respiratory and urinary tracts. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of S. maltophilia isolates collected from a tertiary care setting and frequency of multi, extensively...
